Mid-Autumn Celebration

As our Mid-Autumn Day and National Day are coming, it's a good time to break away from work for one lovely evening! BUCSSA is hosting a Mid-Autumn Day Celebration.

It is the biggest social event so far this year among fellow Chinese students and scholars in BU. It's going to be great fun! You are cordially invited!

Time: Saturday, Sep 25th, from 6 to 9 pm,

Location: Matcalf Hall (2nd floor of the George Sherman Union).

Activities include: Fantastic performances, contemporary and/or traditional, FUN games and entertainments, free mooncake and refreshments.

The topic will be "Professional skills for Finance Professionals".

This discussion will bring together finance professionals from different consulting as well as non-consulting firms. The focus of the panel discussion will be to make finance students and young financial professionals aware of the necessary consulting skill and their application in non-consulting job profiles.

About Speakers:

John Manning, Partner, Deloitte
John Manning has 23 years of public accounting experience, specializing in multi-national complex businesses, in the media, technology and life sciences industries. He serves a number of Deloitte's largest, fastest growing clients and has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions work, public company reporting issues, and multi-national companies. John is one of the Boston office's professional practice directors, having served as a deputy in that position for 10 years. In addition, he is a frequent speaker at industry events on topics such as software revenue recognition and business combinations. 

Pauline W.F. Mak, Partner, KPMG LLP 
Pauline Mak is a partner in KPMG LLP's Boston federal tax practice. Pauline has over 21 years of experience in federal tax principally serving technology, life sciences and manufacturing clients. She is experienced in both transactional and operational tax issues for publicly and privately held companies with multi-state and multinational operations. Her experience also includes a rotational assignment with KPMG's Washington National tax Practice, where she advised on technical tax matters and wrote memoranda for firmwide distrbution. Pauline has extensive experience with income tax accounting issues under US GAAP and IFRS, including tax issues related to business combinations and share based payments. She is a national instructor for KPMG on accounting for income taxes. 
Pauline is president of the New England chapter of Ascend, a professional organization dedicated to enabling its members, business partners and the community to leverage the leadership and global business potential of Pan-Asians. Pauline is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants. She is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach with a degree in finance and accounting. She earned her master's degree in business taxation from the University of Southern California. 
Pauline grew up in Hong Kong and moved to the United States when she was 16 years old. She currently resides in Brookline, Massachusetts with her husband and two daughters. 


Russell Cheung, Chief Financial Officer, Intrinsix
Russell Cheung, CPA, has more than 20 years of experience in technology consulting, e-commerce, and financial services environments.  Mr. Cheung brings together broad financial management and leadership skills to Intrinsix, with a fusion of entrepreneurial energy with a consultative mentality. 
Mr. Cheung joined Intrinsix Corp., an electronic design service company, as controller in 2000, where he subsequently played a major role in its 2001 initial public offering.  In 2006, he was promoted to Chief Financial Officer and provided financial leadership to facilitate both rapid business growth and down cycle restructuring.  Mr. Cheung overseas the company's finance operations with responsibility for all of the financial reporting, balance sheet management, treasury, audit and tax.  He also focuses on strengthening the company's business information systems, providing real-time access to critical operational performance metrics across the business. 
Previously, Mr. Cheung served as manager of financial analysis of Be Free, Inc., an Internet marketing company, provided in-depth analysis and financial modeling in support of its initial public offering. Prior to that, Mr. Cheung served as senior financial analyst at The Boston Consulting Group, a global management consultancy where he developed and standardized an automated forecasting and budgeting model for worldwide implementation and consolidation. 
Before his role at BCG, he served as finance manager for Gordon Brother Group, a capital advisory firm with a focus on inventory lending and retail business restructuring. Mr. Cheung was responsible for corporate finance operations, including research and identification of new business opportunities, and the successful establishment of finance functions of an asset based lending operations.   His financial management experience also includes tenures at Fleet Bank and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Dr. Ming Tong M.D., MBE
Dr. Ming Tong is currently an advisor at Wall Street Advisory, Standard and Poor, specifically for Biotech & Pharmaceutical Industry. He has provided medical scientific consulting & investment advisory for biotech & life sciences companies since 2008. Prior to that, he worked as Medical Director at Pfizer, Inc. at their Worldwide Pharmaceutical Operation from 2007-2008. Prior to 2007, he was at Smith Hanley Consulting leading projects that contracted with Novartis, Sanofi-Adventis Pharmaceutical, Johnson & Johnson, OTSUKA MRI Pharmaceutical Inc, etc. 
Dr. Ming Tong got his M.D, Doctor of Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine. He got his MTS , Medical Ethics & Sciences from Harvard University, and his M.S., Bioengineering /Medical Devices from University of California, Berkeley by their joint Program: UCSF School of Medicine. He got his B.A., (Honors), M.Sc, Physiology / Medical Pharmacology from S. Illinois University. 


Joel L. Singer, Adjunct Professor, Brandeis International Business School
Joel L. Singer is an adjunct professor at the International Business School at Brandeis University.  Mr. Singer is the managing partner of Boston Digital Ventures, which focuses on clean / green technology solutions (www.boston-digital.com). In addition, Mr. Singer currently serves on the boards of: Syntha Corporation, a developer of decision support software applications for optimizing power plant operations (www.syntha.com); Enercom Inc., a provider of energy conservation software and services to energy and water utilities (www.enercomusa.com); and National Integrated Employer Solutions LLC, a provider of HR and benefit administration services (www.nebsinc.com). His prior board activities include: the Center for Advancement of Energy Markets, a Washington, DC based think tank; and New Energy Capital LLC, a developer of renewable energy projects.
Over his career, Mr. Singer has held a variety of CEO positions: President and co-CEO of Bay State Gas / Northern Utilities, one of the largest gas utilities and energy providers in New England (nyse: BGC); CEO of Navigant Consulting's Energy & Water Business, one of the world's largest independent energy consulting firms (nyse: NCI); and CEO of Boston Digital LLC, a start-up software development firm.
Mr. Singer received his MBA degree with honors from the University of Houston, and received his BS in Mechanical Engineering with high honors from Michigan State University

NECINA-IBM YES 5.0 - SMART PLANET

DESCRIPTION

2010 YES 5.0 (Youth Entrepreneurship Service program), organized by NECINA and IBM, is a dedicated FREE forum for high school  and college students to enter the real world of business. From the 10-class program, students learn to work in startup teams, develop business ideas and participate in a business plan contest to positively change our planet. The program will cover Business Plans, Product Conceptualization, Company Structure, Finance, Sales and Marketing, Public Speaking and Presentation skills. Each class will feature a distinguished speaker and an exciting instructor to show students how skills learned can be applied in the real world. Winners will gain cash prizes and possible internship opportunities in sponsoring organizations.

受“2010中国国际人才交流大会”主办单位中国国家外专局、深圳市人民政府授权委托,北美洲中国学人国际交流中心、中华海外人才网、FESCO深圳市方胜人力资源服务有限公司将于今年10月在深圳承办“第九届北美洲中国学人高科技项目暨人才交流大会(北美留交会)”,并在全球范围内组织1000名拥有硕士、博士学位的海外学人参会(不局限于北美洲;海外学人在会议期间食宿交通免费)。这是北美留交会创办10年来,首次移师中国,在国内召开。

2010中国国际人才交流大会”是每年召开一届的年会,是中国规模最大、层次最高的人才大会,每年中国国家领导人出席大会,近千家海内外大型机构、企业、高校参展,是一个充满商机与工作机会的盛会。

厦门市认真贯彻落实国家“千人计划”和福建省引才计划精神,于2010年4月制定出台《厦门市引进海外高层次人才暂行办法》和《关于加快建设海西人才创业港,大力引进领军型创业人才的实施意见》两个政策文件,计划用5-10年引进100名海外高层次人才和300名领军型创业人才,简称“双百计划”。
           “双百计划”主要内容
一、政策扶持。市财政每年安排1.5亿元人才工作专项资金用于“双百计划”。
对引进的海外高层次人才,给予每人100万元补助,可重复享受上一级引才计划补助。入选国家“千人计划”的人才,各级补助累计最高可达400万元。此外,在科研、项目经费、职称评聘等方面给予支持。创办企业的,同时享受领军型创业人才的扶持政策。
对引进的领军型创业人才,提供最高2300万元的各类扶持资金,其中创业启动资金100万至500万元,还包括政府创投、贴息贷款、科研经费等其他申请资金,特别优秀的项目可突破上限。此外,给予100至500平方的创业场所(5年免租金),三年内缴纳个税地方留成部分全部返还。
二、生活保证。“双百计划”人才在住房、配偶就业、子女就学、医疗等方面可享受优惠待遇。

 “双百计划”主要优惠政策简介:
一、引进的海外高层次人才。
 1、 工作条件支持。市属单位入选本市和国家引才计划的人才,市政府给予每人100万元人民币补助。在厦省部属单位入选本市和国家引才计划的人才以及市属单位入选省引才计划的人才,市政府再给予每人50万元人民币补助。优先推荐引进人才的科研项目申报国家、省各类科技计划项目,市级科技经费予以优先配套支持。引进人才负责市重大科技项目或重点实验室、工程技术中心、企业技术中心的,根据引进人才科研项目启动情况及需求,可提供不少于100万元人民币的经费支持。
2、职称评审。首次申报评定职称,可按其学术和专业技术水平及能力,直接申报评定相应档次的专业技术资格,
其在国外取得的业绩成果,可以作为申报职称时的业绩成果提交。在厦工作期间需晋升高一级专业技术职务的,不受评聘时限和岗位职数限制,并优先评聘。
3、创业扶持。引进人才进入各区、各类园区创业的,可依照厦门市《关于加快建设海西人才创业港,大力引进领军型创业人才的实施意见》的有关规定享受创业扶持待遇。
4、落户。人才及其随迁配偶和未满18周岁的未婚子女,可按规定享受居留和出入境手续简化便利。具有中国国籍的引进人才及其随迁的配偶子女,愿意在厦门落户的,不受出国前户籍所在地限制。
5、生活保障。在厦创业、工作期间,享受市三级医疗保健待遇。引进人才及其配偶、子女可不受国籍、户籍限制,参加厦门市社会保险,享受本市城镇居民同等待遇。
6、住房优惠。五年内可免费租住人才住房或专家公寓,或按规定享受相应租房补贴。可不受国籍、户籍、人事关系限制,按厦门市人才住房有关规定,优先租赁、购买人才住房。
7、配偶就业。配偶应聘到市属事业单位,符合招聘条件的,可采用考核方式直接聘用;暂时无法安排工作的,用人单位在两年内参照本单位人员平均工资水平,以适当方式为其发放生活补贴。
8、子女就学。子女在义务教育阶段入学时,可择校一次。
二、引进的领军型创业人才。
1、资金扶持。引进人才创办的企业可获得100万元至 500万元的市政府创业启动资金;可申请获得300万元至1000万元的政府创业投资资金;可申请获得科技创新贷款贴息,贴息额度为以基准利率计算的贷款年利率的50%,单个项目的贴息年限一般为2年,年贴息额在200万元以内;可申请获得科技创新贷款担保支持,担保资金额不超过300万元。可申请获得最高300万元的科技创新研发资金。
2、场所支持。可获得所在区或园区提供不少于100—500平方米的创业场所,五年内免交租金。
3、个税优惠。三年内缴纳个人所得税地方留成部分,由当地财政全额奖励返还。
4、其他扶持。可承担市重点科技、产业、工程项目任务,产品符合政府采购要求的,纳入采购目录,优先推荐使用。
5、住房待遇。引进人才可租住人才住房,五年内免租金,或按规定享受相应租房补贴。可不受国籍、户籍、人事关系限制,按照厦门市人才住房的有关规定优先购买、租赁人才住房。
6、落户。设立专门集体户,引进人才及其随迁配偶、未满18周岁子女可自由选择在住房所在地、集体户或岛外落户。
7、配偶就业。根据引进人才配偶原就业情况、职业身份统筹协调。
8、子女就学。人才子女在义务教育阶段入学时,可择校一次。
9、社会保险。引进人才及其配偶、子女可不受国籍、户籍限制参加厦门市社会保险,享受本市城镇居民同等待遇。
10、居留和出入境。引进人才及其配偶、未满18周岁子女按厦门市有关规定,享受居留和出入境手续简化的便利。

Hello folks!!

BUCSSA will be hosting its annual Mid-Autumn Festival this year in the Matcalf Hall located on the 2nd floor of the George Sherman Union on September 25th. To ensure the quality of the show, create opportunities to involve more BU students in this event planning, as well as present the Chinese community to the broader society, we would like to recruit actors and gather sparkling show ideas.

As long as you are willing to present yourself and make yourself known to more people, you are more than welcomed to sign up and join us!!

We will meet all of you who have signed up and arrange dry runs accordingly at the end of August as well as the beginning of September. With your input, and together with our efforts, we are confident to carry out a high-quality performance this year.

We would like to recruit actors/gather ideas in the following:

1. Self-directed hip-pop dance

2. Singing: pop and ethnic opera

3. Drama scripts and actors (should be specifically relevant to life in BU and expand upon relationships)

4. Jugglery and magician

5. Other
